For any true deer hunter, there’s no better time to hunt than during the rut. This time, we traveled to the breathtaking mountains of Palencia, in northern Spain, specifically to the renowned Fuentes Carrionas Game Reserve. Our mission? To help our friend and passionate deer hunter harvest a trophy red stag in one of Spain’s most iconic hunting areas.
Early Signs of the Rut – A Promising Start
Although the rut had just begun, the stags were still cautious, not yet fully engaged in the intense roaring battles of the peak breeding season. That made our challenge even greater—but no true deer hunter is intimidated by a little difficulty.
As the sun began to set and temperatures dropped, we heard the first timid roars echoing through the valleys. It wasn’t long before we started spotting red deer with our spotting scopes.
One stag in particular caught our eye—an perfect trophy—but getting close would require at least an hour of stalking, and the light was fading fast.
Rather than risk a rushed shot, we decided to simply enjoy the last half hour of light, observe the deer’s behavior, and plan our strategy for the next day.
A Magical Dawn Surrounded by Roaring Stags
With the first rays of sunlight and the powerful bellows of the stags guiding us, we relocated the same trophy red stag from the evening before. This time, he had moved to a new area.
We climbed to a ridge with a commanding view of the terrain and waited. It looked like the stag was preparing to retreat to a dense patch of forest just below our position. If he followed that pattern, we would have a perfect opportunity.
The hunter was thrilled, soaking in the scene. Moments like this—waiting quietly, listening to the roars, watching nature unfold—are what red stag hunting in Spain is all about
The Stag Moves Within Range
After several intense minutes of anticipation, the red stag finally began heading toward the forest—and directly in our direction. He stopped 200 yards away, just on the edge of the dense brush.
The hunter was lying prone, perfectly positioned. All he needed was for the stag to turn and offer a broadside shot. After a final roar, the stag moved into position. The hunter squeezed the trigger, and the shot was perfect. The majestic red deer collapsed on the spot.
Tracking the Stag Through Dense Brush
Despite the clean shot, the thick brush made it challenging to locate the exact spot where the deer had fallen. Fortunately, our Bavarian Mountain Hound, Brezo, made quick work of it—finding the stag in under a minute. It was an emotional moment for everyone involved.
Preparing the Trophy and Processing the Meat
After honoring the animal and capturing a few unforgettable photos, we carefully prepared the trophy and processed the meat. For us, using every part of the animal is one of the most respectful ways to conclude a successful hunt.
Enjoying the venison at home, with friends and family, is the perfect way to celebrate a memorable red stag hunt in Spain.
