A Gredos ibex hunt is always an incredible adventure, especially when using a bow and arrow. The night before our hunt, a snowfall blanketed the mountains, setting the stage for a breathtaking sunrise. Within just 15 minutes of setting out, we spotted our first ibex.
Looking for a big Gredos ibex
The Gredos Mountains are an internationally renowned destination for ibex hunting, known for our ethical approach, we only harvest old and weakened animals in their final days.
The first group we encountered consisted of a large number of healthy adult ibex. They were in the lower part of the valley, where the snow hadn’t reached. So, we continued our search for an old and massive Gredos ibex.
While we were looking for a Gold Medal Gredos ibex to complete this bowhunting in Spain, we also spotted some deer and wild boars along the way.
There was no rush, we had three full days of hunting ahead. The first day was more about enjoying the experience and giving our friends from the USA a glimpse of what an ibex hunt in Spain is like.
Suddenly, a group of three old ibex appeared. The atmosphere shifted from relaxed to intense. The hunting opportunity we had been waiting for was about to happen.
A bow and arrow opportunity while hunting Gredos ibex
Mike grabbed an arrow, and we began our slow, careful approach. At times, the ibex sensed something unusual, but since the wind was in our favor, they remained calm.
After more than 30 minutes of careful stalking, we were just 40 yards away, the moment we had been waiting for!
Mike released his arrow, and it flew straight toward the ibex but landed a bit low. Fortunately, he quickly took another shot, and this time, it was perfect.
What an unforgettable bowhunting trip! We celebrated a successful hunt with an incredible Spanish ibex, carefully took the skin for a shoulder mount, and expressed our gratitude to both the ibex and the Gredos Mountains for such an amazing hunting experience.
Before heading back, we enjoyed some Iberian ham and Spanish wine in the heart of the mountains, a perfect way to end the adventure. A special thanks to the Severson family, and especially to Connie, for her passion for hunting despite the cold and the long walk.
