With all our hunting equipment packed, our cooler filled with ice and drinks, and the rifle perfectly zeroed in, we left Madrid early in the morning to pick up our friend John at Barcelona Airport. We hunt Pyrenean chamois in several mountainous areas, all located close to Barcelona, so once we met John, it didn’t take long before we reached our hotel in the heart of the Pyrenees.
First Afternoon: Spotting Pyrenean Chamois in Tough Conditions
After a short rest to recover from the journey, we headed straight to the hunting area, eager to begin the adventure.
The weather wasn’t on our side — low clouds, wind, and intermittent snowfall made visibility difficult. Despite this, we managed to spot a few groups of Pyrenean chamois scattered along the steep ridges. Unfortunately, none of them were within shooting range before nightfall, so we called it a day and returned to the hotel. There, we enjoyed a delicious traditional Spanish dinner and prepared for the next day with high hopes.
A Challenging Morning: Missed Shot at a Gold Medal Chamois
The next day greeted us with even heavier snowfall. Visibility was poor, but we knew for sure one thing: from the hotel, we wouldn’t see any chamois. So we geared up and headed into the mountains once again.
After a short hike, we spotted a magnificent Pyrenean chamois — a potential gold medal trophy. Unfortunately, strong wind conditions made the shot difficult, and John missed. It was a disappointing moment, but part of the reality of mountain hunting. We regrouped and continued searching, determined not to give up.
Success at Last: A Truly Old Pyrenean Chamois
Just as we were about to take a break and wait for better weather in the afternoon, luck turned in our favor. At a distance of about 600 yards, we located an exceptionally old Pyrenean chamois — a true trophy. The plan was simple: our local guide stayed on a high vantage point to track the animal in case it moved, while John and I began a slow, careful stalk.
It took nearly an hour to get within 180 yards due to the high elevation, thick snow, and icy winds. When we finally reached the shooting position, the chamois was lying down, forcing us to wait in the cold for more than 20 long minutes. Eventually, the animal stood up — and John made a perfect shot.
It was a fantastic reward: a 12-year-old silver medal Pyrenean chamois. A hard-earned and well-deserved trophy after a demanding mountain hunt.
Congratulations to our friend John, and thank you once again for trusting us with your hunting adventure in Spain!
